NEIT Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Effective July 18, 2024: NEIT has adopted an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy. Students are responsible for knowing and following the AI Policy noted in each class syllabus. If a student cannot find an AI Policy in their class syllabus, they must contact their instructor.

Important: AI use policies may vary among courses. Always check your syllabus or contact your instructor before using AI tools in assignments.

Citing AI in APA Format

If a student uses generative AI in creating a class assignment, they must cite it using APA format. The library follows the guidance in the APA Formatting and Documentation Guidelines (undergraduate, graduate) published by NEIT's Academic Skills Center.

How to Document AI Use:

  • Check the AI policy for each course in your syllabus.
  • Give credit for AI output tools: editing, translating, generating ideas, processing data, quoting, paraphrasing, etc.
  • Visit APAstyle.org for the most current information as rules may change.

AI Citation Format:

In-Text Citations:

Collection Development Policy

Collection Development is the process by which materials are selected for inclusion in the library collection. Factors include curriculum areas, fund availability, access through sharing networks, and ongoing assessment of user information needs.

Purpose and Goals

NEIT provides accelerated degree and certificate programs in high-demand domains through online, hybrid, and in-person learning. The library prioritizes digitally accessible resources that are current and available 24/7, while maintaining a curated print collection for diverse learners.

Library Users

  • Primary Users: NEIT students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Community Access: East Greenwich residents (18 years or older) have borrowing privileges
  • Resource Sharing: Participation in OCLC Worldshare Interlibrary Loan and Library of Rhode Island (LORI) networks

Selection Process

Librarians make final determinations on adding titles to the library collection. In consultation with faculty and in support of accreditation requirements, librarians select resources that support user information needs.

User Input

All library users may submit suggestions for library purchases. Current students, staff, and faculty can use the following forms:

  • Suggested Books to Purchase Form
  • Reconsideration of Materials Form

Weeding & Deaccessioning

Librarians determine the permanent removal of titles from the collection using MUSTIE (misleading, ugly, superseded, trivial, irrelevant, or obtained elsewhere) or CREW (continuous review, evaluation, and weeding) methodologies. For more information, consult the ALA Collection Maintenance and Weeding guide.

Process

  • Damaged Items: Frequently used items will be replaced when possible.
  • Out-of-Print Books: Attempts made to purchase at reasonable cost or repair if replacement unavailable.
  • Disposal: Removed books sent to Better World Books or placed on free book display.
  • Assessment: Regular collection evaluation with special attention to currency of academic program materials.

There is no set quota for weeding materials. Decisions are based on relevance, condition, and usage patterns to benefit all library users.

Gifts & Donations

The library adds gifted and donated materials according to the same criteria used for purchased materials. The library reserves the right to refuse or dispose of gifts as deemed appropriate.

Donation Guidelines

  • Gifts not added to the collection will be donated to charity.
  • The library cannot provide monetary valuations for donated items.
  • Consider contacting Friends organizations of local public libraries for alternative donation options.

Archives

The Archives collects and serves as a repository of NEIT-related material of sufficient historical importance to warrant permanent retention.

Archived Materials Include:

  • Articles and publicity materials.
  • Event programs and faculty publications.
  • Audio/visual recordings and memorabilia.
  • Class and curriculum-related materials.
