Understanding Library of Congress Call Numbers

NEIT Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System to organize books on the shelves. Learning to read call numbers will help you locate books more efficiently and discover related materials in your field of study.

How to Read Call Numbers

Library of Congress call numbers have several parts that work together to create a unique address for each book:

.G3
C45
2023

Call Number Components:

  • Class Letters (TK): Subject area - Technology, specifically Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • Class Number (7895): More specific topic within that subject
  • Cutter Numbers (.G3, C45): Represent the author's last name and book title
  • Date (2023): Publication year

How Books Are Arranged

  • Alphabetically by letters: A, B, C... then AA, AB, AC... then BA, BB, BC
  • Numerically by whole numbers: 1, 2, 10, 100, 1000 (not 1, 10, 100, 1000, 2)
  • Decimally by cutter numbers: .A1, .A2, .A15, .A3, .B1
