New England Tech, along with many other Rhode Island colleges and universities accepted the challenge set forth by Governor Raimondo to lower the cost of a college education by using openly licensed teaching materials. This is called the Open Textbook Initiative.
Openly licensed textbooks use a Creative Commons licencse instead of copyright, which allows teachers, instructors and faculty to use, update and distribute the textbooks without having to pay commercial licensing fees. This saves students the expense of the hefty price of some textbooks. This is called Open Educational Resources. A resource page has been created to give examples of what other colleges are doing, and to learn more.
