Introduction
The
Subject Resource Series is produced by
the staff of the NEIT Library for the students
and faculty of New England Institute of Technology.
The
Subject Resource Series provides descriptions
of basic resources available at the Library,
and an annotated guide to online resources that are pertinent
to each technology. Keyed
to broad topics, the Subject Resource Series is intended
to be a starting point and not a comprehensive guide to
all of the resources in a subject area.
Since
the guides are organized by general subject area, you may
need to refer to information from more than one guide to
cover the topics that make up your program of study. For
example, resources for students in the Video and Radio Production
Technology can be found in both Communications
and Computers.
Ask
a Librarian: Remember that if you have questions
or need assistance, do not hesitate to ask any Library staff
member. We are always available to provide assistance.

Periodicals
Periodicals
(a term often used interchangeably with magazines
or journals) are publications issued multiple
times per year. The NEIT Library subscribes to general-interest
magazines as well as technical and scholarly journals. Current
issues of print periodicals are shelved alphabetically on
the Current Periodicals bookshelves in the front of the
Library, and older issues are bound by volumes and shelved
in the Bound Periodicals Collection, currently located in
the Tall Stacks.
All
periodical titles are cataloged and can be found in the
Library
Catalog. The records for the periodical titles
include a holdings statement that lists the specific issues
we own and their location in the Library. [Periodical
Holdings List]. The catalog records also include
links to the periodical title’s companion websites,
which include additional information, ranging from indexes,
abstracts, full text for current issues, to complete archives
of back issues. [NOTE: Many periodical titles have two separate
records, one for Current Periodicals and one for Bound Periodicals.]
The
Periodical Holdings List is an alphabetical
list of all current and bound periodical titles owned or
subscribed to by the Library. The List includes the physical
location of the print subscriptions in the Library and whether
or not back issues are available in bound format or online.
The List also contains indexing information and availability
in the Library’s full text subscription databases.
The Periodical Holdings List
is available online through the Library’s website
(http://library.neit.edu/perhold.htm,
or the links listed under the Online
Resources button).
Any
of the Library’s print periodicals that are also available
full-text online are listed in EBSCO
A-to-Z®, a locator tool that lists all
of the journals and periodicals that are full-text in the
NEIT Library's research databases and publisher packages.
A
list of what the Library collects is included in the Periodical
Holdings List, or check the catalog.
Full-text
Databases
The
NEIT Library subscribes to a number of
online full-text databases that
are available from Ebsco Publishing via the EBSCOhost
platform. The main research database is Academic Search
Premier, a multi-disciplinary database that provides full
text for more than 4,600 journals, pdf backfiles to 1975
(or further) for well over one hundred journals, and searchable
cited references for more than 1,000 titles. There are
also databases that are subject-specific (business, health,
history, newspaper, professional development) to name
a few. Most of the EBSCOhost databases include abstracts
(a short description of the article's contents) for all
articles, as well as full-text or full-image (including
graphics) for many articles.
Links
to these databases can be found in the Library’s
online catalog (search by title, then click on the link
in the specific record) and also through the Library website
(click on the “Articles
and Databases” button and then the
link to the database.) Passwords are required for use
of these databases.
To
obtain passwords, Ask a Librarian at
the Reference Desk or submit an online reference question
form using your New England Tech e-mail account.

Browsing
the Collection
The
Library’s book collections are organized
according to the Library of Congress classification system.
This classification system is a series of letters and numbers
used to locate materials on the library's shelves. Each book
has a unique call number (created by combining the subject
classification http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/
with a “Cutter” number based on the book’s
author and/or title and date of publication). These numbers
are found in the online catalog below the title in the Search
Results list and in the Labeled Display screen for a specific
title, and appear as call numbers on the spine label of each
book or media program.
The
general book collection is currently divided into two collections,
the Low Stacks, which have the more recently published volumes
along with the most popular, and the Tall Stacks, which
contain older volumes. There is also the New Books area,
located by the entry doors of the Library, where all newly
added books are shelved for their first month in the
Library. Reference materials are found in the Reference
Collection, located near the Reference Desk. Reference works
are defined as those which are meant to be consulted or
referred to for some definite piece of information. They
are characterized by being seldom, if ever, read in their
entirety and are non-narrative in structure. Works selected
for the Reference Collection are those for which there is
expected to be a reasonable demand for use by library patrons
and reference librarians. In general, they provide background
information, definitions, statistical and factual information.
Internet
Resources
Internet Resources included in the
Subject Resource Series have been evaluated
by Librarians. The Internet listings are chosen for their
usefulness with respect to the specific topic and for the
reliability of the information that they contain.
The following top-level domain names (TLD)* or extensions
are generally considered useful for understanding the kind
of website: the ending .gov indicates a government site,
.edu indicates an educational site, .org indicates an organization's
site, .mil indicates a military site, .net indicates a network,
and .com indicates a commercial site.
