  • What are the Library hours? (as of January , 2012)
    Regular NEW hours are:
    • Monday-Thursday 7:00 am - 8:00 pm
      Friday 7:00 am-4:00 pm
      Saturday 8:00 am-1:00 pm

      NOTE:
      Friday until 4:30pm and Saturday until 1:30pm
      on weeks 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, & 10

      Any changes to the Library's hours are posted on the Library Homepage.


  • Is there a campus map for the East Greenwich campus?
    Yes. East Greenwich directions and general map

  • For how long may I borrow books?
    The loan period is 3 weeks. Books can be renewed for two additional loan periods, unless they are requested by another patron. Books can be renewed three ways:
    1. In person at the Circulation Desk.
    2. By telephone.

    3. Online. First, establish a PIN number in person at the Circulation desk. Go to Patron Review. For help on this feature, see L.S Patron Review help.
  • Can I borrow textbooks from the Library?
    Yes and no. In general, the Library does not purchase textbooks for every class. However, textbooks for Liberal Arts courses are purchased and automatically placed on Reserve at the Circulation Desk, which means that these textbooks can be used in the Library.

    The Library owns some technical textbooks. To determine what the Library has in its collection, consult the Library Catalog. [or from the Library Homepage [http://library.neit.edu], choose Library Catalog from the navigation bar.]
  • Can I print my papers from the Library computers?
    Yes. The Library computers are equipped with MS Word 2007, and if your documents are created in the MS Word software, they will immediately come up from your portable drive (thumb, flash, etc.).
  • Can I borrow DVDs and other media?
    No, videos remain in the Library to be available for use in class. To view media programs, ask a Library staff member to assist you in the use of the media equipment. All media are cataloged and listed in the Library Catalog.
  • Can I get a book or article that I need if it is not readily available in the Library?
    Yes, most of the time, the Library can obtain any books or articles we do not own through our Interlibrary Loan Department. It usually takes several days to two weeks to receive the articles or books.

    The NEIT Library participates in LORI (Library of Rhode Island) and OCLC networks which allows access to local, regional, national and international interlibrary loan materials.
  • Are there any resources available for me to use from home?
    Yes. There are excellent source materials that can be used outside the library.

    1. Library Website
    The Library Homepage [http://library.neit.edu] contains a wealth of Librarian evaluated searchable links to technical and general resources. Website content includes numerous annotated subject-specific links, online research and writing guides as well as web pages for specific NEIT communities such as faculty, foreign students and new students. All pages are continually updated for new resources and for outdated content.


    2. Library Catalog
    The Library Catalog includes print materials such as books, periodicals, media and websites. The Library Catalog is accessible on or off-campus. From the Library Homepage [http://library.neit.edu], choose Articles and Databases on the navigation bar.

    3. Subscription Databases
    The Library subscribes to many databases that include full-text articles, full text digital books, and other research database available off campus to NEIT students by first obtaining passwords from the Reference Librarian (in person OR call: 401-739-5000, x3472, OR email.) Thousands of full-text articles are available through the searchable databases. From the Library Homepage [http://library.neit.edu], choose Articles and Databases on the navigation bar.
  • Is there a place available where I can study with other students?
    Yes. There are 5 group study rooms, 2 of which have media:Scape technology installed. Ask for access and reservations at the Circulation Desk.

  • Is there a copier and/ or scanner in the Library?
    Yes, the Library has a copier. Copies are 10 cents per page.
    Yes, the Library has a scanner. Scan to tiff or pdf for FREE.

  • Can I come to the Library just to study?
    The Library provides areas with computers, tables, study carrels, comfortable seating and group study rooms for collaborative work and quiet study.

How Do I?

  • Use the library
    With a wealth of resources -- both print and digital (electronic), the Library can be a complex place.
    ASK the Reference Librarian to give you a tour or answer your questions.

    Read through the FAQs and How do I? sections to see if any of your questions are answered. If not, come into the Library and get help.

  • Learn about library policies
    Learn a lot about the library and its policies, hours, Mission Statement and more on the Library Info page.


  • Get a library card
    Your library card is your student ID. Stop by the Circulation Desk -- directly ahead when you enter the Library. With the information on your Student ID, the Circulation Department will access your record. For off-campus use, create a PIN at the Circulation desk.


  • Find a book
    Search
    the Library Catalog. The Library Catalog includes print materials such as books and periodicals (publications such as journals, newspapers, magazines, serials) as well as electronic information sources, websites and other media. The catalog is accessible on the Internet from any computer anywhere -- no password required. From the Library Homepage [http://library.neit.edu], choose Library Catalog on the navigation bar.

    There are many ways to search the catalog. ASK a Reference Librarian for a guided tour.

    Books: After you locate the book that you want -- you will need to write down the shelf Location of the book and the Call Number -- two letters followed by a series of numbers. This is the Library of Congress Classification System that codes where the book is shelved in the library. Any staff member can show you how to find the book.

  • Find a newspaper
    Finding a newspaper is similar to finding a book, so follow the directions
    above. Some newspapers are available electronically through our database sources. If there is electronic access through one of our subscriptions, it will be noted in the catalog record.

  • Find an article
    Articles from scholarly journals, magazines or newspapers can be found by using one or more of several sources depending on the particular publication. Finding an article can be easy OR not so easy because there are lots of variables such as which year?, which issue?, from what source?, etc. Be sure to ASK the Reference Librarian (in person, by telephone, or be email) for help in guiding you through the search process.

    Articles are located in:
    1) Periodicals/ journals that the library owns.
    2) Full-text databases such as EBSCO
    3) Interlibrary loan. If the library does not own a publication, we can send for the article from another academic library or institution.

  • Write a research paper
    The Research Paper Format [from the Library homepage, http://library.neit.edu, choose Guide & Tutorials] page gives an overall account of creating and constructing a research paper including formatting and editing the paper, making reference citations, and links for further study.
  • Create a resume
    See Resume Preparation Tips [from the Library homepage, http://library.neit.edu, choose Student Resources.]


  • Get career help
    The library has many resources for choosing careers. Besides the print collection, the Library website has a page titled, Career Help: Websites for Choosing and Finding a Job. General sources for explaining careers, salaries, print materials in the library and professional organizations that will give you information on what the job is really like.

  • Learn to write a cover letter

  • Learn library words and terms
    Library words and terms often overlap with Information Technology words as Librarians are sometimes referred to as the "gatekeepers of knowledge." This glossary will surely help you speak with library professionals.
