The Transportation guide contains resources on automotive and marine transportation. Topics include: vehicle maintenance, troubleshooting and repair; marine engine repair, motorcycles, autobody repair, painting, and alternative fuels.

Current issues of print periodicals are shelved alphabetically in the Periodicals Room on the second floor of the Library, microfilm is located in the microfilm cabinet in the Reference Room, unclassified bound volumes are shelved alphabetically by title on the lower shelves in the Periodicals Room and in the Reference Room, and classified titles are shelved by call number in the lower floor stacks with the circulating collection.

Periodical Indexes and Full-text Periodical Databases

Indexes are subject guides to the articles included in periodicals. To locate articles on a specific topic, first select the index that most closely matches the subject of your research.

Online indexes and periodical databases can be accessed through any computer with Internet access. The Library's primary indexes are online and include abstracts (a short description of the article's contents) for all articles as well as full text or full image (including graphics) for many articles.

The following are indexes that are likely to include most topics related to the subjects covered in this booklet. Please keep in mind that there are other online indexes and older print indexes in the Library that may also be of use. Links to the databases listed below can be found in the Library’s online catalog (search by title and click on link in specific record) and also through the Library website (click on Online Resources button and the link to periodical database.) Passwords are required for use of these databases. Stop in at the Reference Desk or submit an online reference question form using your New England Tech e-mail account to obtain passwords.

Browsing the Collection

The book and media collections are organized according to the Library of Congress classification system. This classification system is a series of letters and numbers used to locate materials on the library's shelves. These numbers are found in the online catalog below the authors and titles in the results list produced by a search, on the right of the Labeled Display screen for a specific title, and as call numbers on the spine of each book or media program. Reference Materials

The following is a brief listing of key reference materials found on the second floor in the Reference Room of the Library that apply to the topic of this booklet. Please remember that this is only a partial listing of reference resources. There is much more to be found either by searching the online catalog or by browsing the collection in the Reference Room. Though reference books do not circulate, there are often older editions in the collection that do circulate.

This book's material ranges from explaining how to start and operate your business to discussing such practical issues as insurance, marketing, cash flow management, internal financial controls, and much more. In non-technical language, the book also discusses--and updates--the various federal, state, and tax laws you will need to know. There are sample forms and additional sources of information as well. The Library also owns the companion volumes for the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut.

This is an alphabetical listing of engineering terms, auto components, racing jargon, hot rodding slang and suspension geometry. Illustrations include basic diagrams and some black and white photos.

Wise, David Burgess (Ed.). (2000). The new illustrated encyclopedia of automobiles: Chartwell Books.

Over 4000 automobiles are arranged alphabetically by manufacturer with subdivisions according to country and date. There are sections on special topics such as car design, safety, production and development. Colorful and heavily illustrated, this reference book provides a concise overview of the history of automobile design.

Georgano, G. N. (Ed.). (1986). The new encyclopedia of automobiles: 1885 to the present. New York: Crescent Books.

This encyclopedia provides a short description of most of the passenger cars offered for sale around the world. Descriptions include make, model, years manufactured, company, country of origin, and distinguishing features. Black and white (and some color) photographs are included for many models.

Terminology included in this text are automotive and related definitions which appear in SAE standards and information reports. It is not a dictionary of automotive terms but rather a compilation of terms and definitions developed by SAE committees.

The "Automotive Handbook" is the standard for practical, concise, and illuminating explanations of the design and operation of automotive systems. The lucid presentation of both basic and complex automotive principles, engineering theory, and applied mathematics is without peer.

Chilton's auto repair manual, 1940-current year. Radnor, PA: Chilton's Book Co.

This is a multi-volume series covering the repair of various U.S. and Canadian model automobiles. Each section is grouped by car manufacturer and arranged in alphabetical order. Included are diagrams and illustrations that demonstrate service procedures. Part numbers are included. The Library also maintains full runs of the Import Car Repair Manual series and the Truck and Van Repair Manual series.

N.A.D.A. official used car guide. (199- ). McLean, VA: National Automobile Dealers Used Car Guide Co.

NADA publishes a variety of series on car prices and resale values of automobiles. Entries are listed alphabetically and grouped according to the dates of manufacture. The above title is updated monthly. The Library also subscribes to the N.A.D.A. official older used car guide, which is updated 3 times a year.

Goodheart-Wilcox automotive encyclopedia. (2000). South Holland, IL: The Goodheart-Wilcox Co.

The Automotive Encyclopedia is designed to be used by students who are interested in entering the field of automotive technology. It can also be used when preparing for ASE certification or for brushing up on skills. There are 54 chapters that discuss automotive systems such as steering, brakes, air conditioning, charging and computer system fundamentals and service. A helpful Dictionary of Automotive Terms is included and an extensive index are parts of the appendixes.

Lenfestey, T. (1994). The Facts on File dictionary of nautical terms. New York: Facts on File.

This title alphabetically arranges both general and specialized nautical terms. "Each entry includes the part of speech, pronunciation, and a definition, and illustrations are shown when it is thought that they will help the reader better understand a word's meaning or its application." Acronyms and abbreviations used in the dictionary are listed in the appendix, followed by a bibliography.

Ettlinger, S. (1995). The Complete illustrated guide to everything sold in marine supply stores. New York: Hearst Marine Books.

This book contains descriptions of practically any type of item one might buy from a marine supplier. Included with the descriptions are tips for item use, care, or buying. Some items include illustrations. A list of mail order sources is included in the back of this book.

Noel, J. V. (1981). The Boating dictionary, sail and power. New York: Van Nostrand.

Over 3,000 terms have been selected based on a wide range of maritime subjects. Most are directly related to powerboats and sailboats and reflect current usage. Also included are basic boat construction terms. Boat building terms are only defined and do not include information on methods of construction.

The WorkBoat directory. (1992). Rockland, ME: The WorkBoat Directory.

This title is a "sourcebook of available workboat operators and suppliers of equipment and services for inland and coastal fleet. More than 4,500 entries contain the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of operating companies, dealers and distributors, equipment manufacturers, and repair yards." An index to advertisers and an index for associations is included as well.
