Introduction
TechArts began as an art
installation in 1995, as a way to showcase the artistic talents of
the students, faculty, and staff of New England Tech and share them
with the rest of the college community. This
single showing was originally conceived by the late Dr. Richard Wertz
and carried out with my assistance.
The concept of TechArts resurfaced in the Spring of 2004, when Dr.
Linda Salter developed a new Humanities and Social Science course entitled Encounter
with Modern Art. This course required a final project
of creating a piece of art based on concepts studied in class. Wishing
to display the interesting projects that she received,
Dr. Salter approached me to use the Library as a gallery for her students'
works. At the same time, the process of assessing the College in preparation
for the decennial accreditation visit was underway, and, as committees
looked to the past to prepare for the future, TechArts began anew.
A committee of faculty and administrative
staff members became fully committed to keeping this tradition alive
and decided to revive the idea of TechArts, combine it with the Encounter
with Modern Art course, and
make it an annual event. The TechArts Committee includes Dr. Linda Salter
(Assistant Professor in Humanities and Social Science), Melissa Hague
(Student Activities Coordinator), Dawn Edmondson (Instructor in Interior
Design), and myself, who set about defining the parameters for the exhibit,
planning the submission and opening dates, and organizing the gallery
opening reception.
This
endeavor has succeeded far beyond our wildest dreams. The
call for artists netted us a wide-ranging collection of art from
52 artists comprising 125 pieces of physical, virtual, fine, and
applied arts. Thirty students, five faculty members, seven staff
members, eleven alumni
and one group (AUT
faculty and students) have
contributed their best efforts for
this exhibition. Some
of the students are members of the Winter Quarter Encounter
with Modern Art course who discovered the artist
within while creating their final projects
for the course. Other artists are seasoned professionals who have
exhibited throughout the area and have won awards for their work.
Still others create art for themselves which they have chosen to
share with the college community.
As you can see in the small photographs of the works below, the
art is striking,
calming, serious, whimsical, thought provoking, and always interesting.
It has been a pleasure working with the artists, living with the
art gracing the Library, and watching the reactions of all who
visit our Library turned art gallery.
I would like to thank my assistant curators, Cindy Pankiewicz (Catalog
Librarian) and Grayce Moorehead (Web Content Manager) for their artistic
sensibilities and their assistance with organizing and arranging the
art works throughout the Library. The final display of works was the
result of many days' worth of collaboration, trying to exhibit the art
singly and in groups, finding the best aesthetic location for each piece. We
sincerely hope that we have done justice to the work given over to our
care.
Finally, we invite everyone to come in and enjoy the art for the entire
month of April and to marvel at the creativity and imagination of the
artists who study and learn and work among us every day.

Artist's Statement |
|
| "My intention in creating this piece of artwork was to have you feel a sense of relaxation, beauty, and fun. By looking at the painting you can see how the beach is calm and peaceful. It makes you feel a sense of relaxation and enjoying yourself at the shore. The color of the sea and sky blending in with the sea gives you a contrast between the colors. As you see the clouds in the sky moving, they move you around, passing you by and circling in the sky. The scene of the beach makes it look fun and enjoyable to visit.” | |

Soldiers of Black Water |
|
| Medium: Digital Photo Collage | |
| Dimensions: 11“ H X 12“ W | |
| Description: Truth, what the war is all about ... oil. | |
| Location: Upper Level Hallway on Table | |
Artist's Statement |
|
| “I wanted to create controversy. The name of the piece of art that I created is called Soldiers of Black Water because of the image content. Soldiers refer to the men and women fighting the war. The black water represents the oil they are fighting to protect. I decided to make a political statement in making this piece because I don’t condone the war. The piece contains images of soldiers both men and women that are fighting the war in Iraq. An oil container is used to symbolize the purpose of the war. I used a picture of a soldier deformed by war, and the coffins of lost soldiers to emphasize the causes of war. I used President Bush’s picture to demonize him. I would not change much of what I created in this piece. I would have liked to add more images that would cause controversy. I chose not to because I wanted to keep the piece settled but maintain a strong image meaning.” | |

Artist's
Statement |
|
"Costume
and clothing design has always been an interest of mine. In my work
as a costumer, I try to convey a sense of the period in time along
with connections between characters to give the audience visual clues
that support the content of the play. This can be a big challenge
in light of the funds available for costuming in non-profit theatre
companies. Sometimes, the challenges rise to the complexity of engineering
to create a costume that also works comfortably for how an actor
has to move in a costume. For instance, the actors playing Cyrano
and Roxanne (shown above) had to be able to conduct a vigorous sword
fight on stage, jumping around and on the furniture without having
the costumes get in the way. Maintaining comfort with lightweight fabrics
and mobility to play the scene as written -- and without injury --
is fairly tricky to do." |

“The meaning of this picture is
that we are all different sizes, shapes, and colors, but we share boundaries,
we mix and match, we overlap, we make up a whole, we run into each

the picture.” |
