Module Three

Connecting with Learning

Introduction Introduction

Identifying your learning needs by understanding the learning process and recognizing how you learn best are an intricate part of your success as a college student and lifelong learner. This module will help you to do that and will give you the opportunity to explore and use the support services available at the Academic Skills Center (ASC). The ASC can assist you in assessing, developing and improving your reading, writing, math and study skills (academic skills).

The ASC provides a wide range of personalized services from individual tutoring to small group developmental and enrichment classes and study skills workshops. Some of the resources offered can also be accessed from your home if you own a computer with Internet access.

In this module, you will examine learning style theory, identify your learning style and learning needs and learn about multiple intelligences. You will explore ways in which the ASC can help you to strengthen and develop your skills. By the end of this module, you will have set specific learning goals.

Summary Summary

•We all learn differently and develop preferred ways of processing information.

•Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences identifies eight kinds of “intelligence” that are not measured the way that the traditional notion of intelligence is measured. Those intelligences are: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist.

•Identifying your learning style and your developed intelligences can help you to select learning strategies that work best for you.

•Capitalize on your strengths and develop your academic skills by setting specific learning goals and using the resources at the ASC.
